The runway at Burlington Int. Airport (shared by the VTANG) is actually a relatively short runway. The mission length is also too long for the F-16s to perform without the use of external tanks. That said, the F-16 has to carry tanks during takeoff. With these tanks, F-16 has take off at full afterburners. This will not be necessary for F-35s. With a larger internal tank and a wider wingspan, full power takeoffs wont need to used and probably wont. Afterburners consume a lot of fuel. Takeoffs produce the majority of noise pollution, so in this case, having the F-35s would actually cause a noise REDUCTION (yes thats right)

The problems with sound levels actually has two parts: the takeoff and the overall flight. The STOVL (short takeoff, vertical landing) version adds a big vertical ducted fan. I assume the substantial increase in noise is partly due to the fact that the F-35 does have only one engine, and as such, must operate at higher power settings to maintain flight. Inlet duct noise may also be a contributor.

All models have a single engine producing around 40,000 lbs thrust.
