GOODYEAR, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) –
LAFB Fire HouseLuke Air Force Base is known for training the best fighter pilots, whether it’s in an F-16 or the F-35.

Many, though, may not realize there is an incredibly dedicated and top-notch fire department at Luke that responds to calls, both on and off base.

“We do respond within a five-mile radius within Luke Air Force Base or outside of the gates automatically,” Chief Master Sergeant and Fire Chief Chris Horsman of the Fire Department on Luke Air Force Base said.

Recently, the fire station received a several $100,000 renovation, thanks to Fighter Country Partnership, one of four nonprofit organizations that benefit from our Courageous Hearts campaign with Fry’s Food Stores.

LAFB Fire House“To have an outside agency, a not-for-profit come in and renovate the fire station and bring up the quality of life was unheard of,” Horsman said. “I hadn’t seen it in my 30 years.”

“When you hear the words from him about what it’s doing for his young airmen and morale, that’s everything we’re all about,” Ron Sites, executive director of Fighter Country Partnership said. “We’re all about enhancing that quality of life and doing everything we can to support this mission here at Luke.”

Many U.S. air bases like Luke have been hit with budget cuts over the past several years, eliminating funding that has pushed Fighter Country Partnership to step up and help.

The fire station renovation is just one of many projects they’re involved with on base.

LAFB Fire House“The last time it was renovated or refreshed was probably 1996, so you can imagine over the course of 20 years wear and tear on an active fire station does take its toll,” Horsman said, who thanks the community for its generous donations.

Without them, he says, things like this just wouldn’t get done.

“I believe you know the military is out there, they’re doing what they can with what they have, but sometimes you know, we need a little bit of help,” Horsman said.
