AZ Humane Society & Petsmart’s Military Pet Foster Program

Military Pet Foster Program

The Arizona Humane Society (AHS) and PetSmart®, Inc. are pleased to announce the expansion of their Project Active Duty program. Project Active Duty, an AHS’ Alternative Placement program, provides temporary foster care for pets of active military personnel throughout their deployment.

As the presenting sponsor of Project Active Duty, PetSmart has dedicated $30,000 over two years to the program. The partnership will raise awareness of the program while also dedicating the necessary resources needed to recruit foster families and increase the number of foster homes available for Project Active Duty pets and the thousands of ill or injured pets who may need temporary shelter beyond what their facilities can provide.

“As a hometown company, PetSmart believes in supporting organizations that enrich the lives of people through the power of pets in our own backyard,” said Eddie Burt, PetSmart Senior Vice President of Supply Chain. “Project Active Duty provides a way to give back to the brave men and women serving our country, and we are proud to partner with the Arizona Humane Society on such an inspiring program.”

Currently, the Project Active Duty program enrolls an average of seven military personnel and their pets each year. Yet, most only learn of Project Active Duty while sitting in AHS’ admissions department preparing to give up their pet for good prior to their deployment. The program has not been without its challenges as the length of foster time, emotional attachment and specific pet requirements sometimes make it difficult to place a pet.

“PetSmart has been a longtime partner of AHS and its support of Project Active Duty will allow us to address those challenges by making sure no military pet parent is ever faced with the heartache of having to surrender a pet because no other option exists, ” said AHS President and CEO, Dr. Steven R. Hansen. “We are proud of those who serve our country and proud to offer them peace of mind knowing that their pet will be cared for and waiting for them upon their return.”

Also sharing in that belief is Credit Union West, another proud supporter of Project Active Duty. Credit Union West continues a 60 year tradition of enhancing the quality of life for those who serve in America’s Armed Forces. Working closely with base leadership, the credit union supports force readiness through a variety of financial fitness programs and is honored and proud to support our troops.

The Arizona Humane Society will host a special launch event and foster orientation on Sunday, April 6 from 1 – 3 p.m. at Avondale’s Council Chambers located at 11465 West Civic Center Dr. Avondale, AZ 85323.
