The Barry M. Goldwater Range / Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Airfield and Luke Air Force Base Auxiliary Airfield #1 JLUS is part of the Arizona Military Regional Compatibility Project, which was conceived as a proactive statewide endeavor to convene the stakeholders around each base . the relevant jurisdictions, base personnel, landowners, and other interested parties . to address land use compatibility issues around the same table.
Consistent with the statewide interest in land use compatibility issues and sustainability of military installations, and recognizing the combined importance to the Luke Air Force Base mission of the Barry M. Goldwater Range (BMGR), Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Airfield (AFAF) and Auxiliary Field #1, a comprehensive approach to these facilities is being taken in this JLUS.
To maintain its mission as one of the premier training bases in the Air Force, Luke Air Force Base requires access to range and training facilities that provide for highly realistic combat training. BMGR is a critical facility because it is authorized for live-fire training, which is made possible through military control of the surface and airspace.
